The Vagus Nerve, Psoas, Anxiety Connection Workshop

Dear Yogis,

Happy November!

One of the classes I took at the October Yoga Show last was all about the Vagus Nerve. I’ve written about this before when I did a workshop with Eddie Stern all about the importance of the Vagus Nerve. The second blog was Eddie Stern, again, when he asked ‘Why Does Yoga Work?’ Clue… it’s the Vagus Nerve!

Well, at the Yoga Show, the workshop ‘The Vagus Nerve, Psoas, Anxiety Connection Workshop’ was with Janie Larmour from The Centre of Yoga in Australia. Have a look below at the class plan of the workshop we did. This is what she says about it:

The vagus nerve connects the brain to the gut, regulating our digestion and digestive enzyme secretion. Poor gut health influences inflammation, mood and anxiety levels. The psoas also has a strong connection to our experience of anxiety and the diaphragm influences both the vagus nerve and psoas. Learn how easy it is to release the psoas and calm the nervous system, moving from 'fight/flight' to 'relax' or 'rest/digest' mode. You will finish this workshop with several techniques and a yoga routine to calm the entire Vagus Nerve, relax the Psoas and calm anxiety.

What could be better!

Classes

Next Thursday, November 9th, I’ll be teaching the 6.45pm Strength & Conditioning class at Eden. Alain's Yoga class precedes it; Daniel’s Spinning class follows it. Do all three!

My lucky studio has a lot of new people coming to practice here and bring their positivity and humour. I’ve introduced a Saturday morning class and next Saturday, the 11th, is already getting bookings. The class is slightly longer and slightly more expensive. It’s really an experiment to see if there’s any demand for a longer class. If you have been practicing 1 hour Ashtanga classes for a while there’s a whole other section to explore.

Here’s a round-up of all classes: Monday and Tuesday = stretchy class at 7.00pm, Wednesday = Ashtanga at 7.00pm, Friday morning = Ashtanga at 8.30am and Saturday morning = Ashtanga at 8.30 – 10.00am. You can book here.

Yoga In The News

The Telegraph has: How a yoga cruise turned me from worrier to warrior. ‘You may ask why a self-confessed yoga-phobic was on a yoga-themed cruise? Tall-ship line Star Clippers only recently returned to Central America for the first time in almost a decade, and with a series of sailings taking in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama selling out quickly, I was eager to get aboard – even if it meant joining one of the many yoga sailings, on which complimentary classes are available for every ability, including complete beginners.’

AsAmNews has: Beware of the Unconstitutional Yoga Pose. (This is quite funny.) ‘As the (Rodney Yee) video started, I sat down in my comfy sofa… For each pose, I started doing a running commentary: Pose #1: I can tell you right now, that’s not gonna happen. Pose #2: Anatomically speaking, I don’t think your left foot is ever supposed to touch your right ear. Is his knee double-jointed? Pose #3: Has he been in a tragic car accident? I don’t see how a normal body can do that. Pose #4: Rodney didn’t say anything, but are you supposed to take muscle relaxants before doing that pose?’
